Caloura - Azores |
Caloura São Miguel - Portugal |
Caloura, formerly known as Vale de Cabaços, is a picturesque fishing village, situated in a small, narrow creek and sheltered by a high cliff. Vineyards set amidst protecting black basalt stone walls add to the town’s beauty. The village boasts a remarkable Baroque structure from the 16th and 17th centuries, the Convento de Caloura. This is where the cult of Christ of the Miracles developed on the island when Pope Paul II offered the image of Christ to the nuns in 1530. To protect the statue from frequent pirate attacks, the statue was transferred to Ponta Delgada’s chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança in 1541.
