Fatima is the main place of pilgrimage for Portugal |
Fatima is a Portuguese village in the county of Ourém that became world famous by marians appearances to three little shepherd (Lucia, and their cousins Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto), there took place between May 13 and 13 October 1917, in Cova da Iria. The construction of the Shrine of Fatima has brought development to the place, managing to be rise to city on July 12, 1997.
The Shrine of Fatima, located in the Cova da Iria, parish of Fatima (Portugal) is one of the most important sanctuaries marianos in the world. In 1917 (year of the Soviet revolution), Jacinta Marto, Francisco Marto and Lucia de Jesus (known as "the three little shepherd"), said they showed up witnessed several appearances of Our Lady. In one of those appearances she would have told them to build a chapel in that place, which currently is the central part of the sanctuary where it is stored an image of Our Lady (such orders was a detail with the content of the revelations). Over the years the shrine has been expanded, up to today, where there are already a basilica and a large church, thereby increasing the absorption capacity of pilgrims in indoor.
