International Puppets Biennial |
International Festival of Puppet |
Once every two years in May, the historical centre of Évora -
classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO - is invaded by
puppets from various countries.
Considered to be one of Europe’s most important puppet festivals,
the Évora International Puppet Festival, held since 1987, is
attended by puppet companies from throughout the world.
The event is organized by Cendrev (the Evora Drama Centre), a
company that has recovered the tradition of the puppets from
Santo Aleixo, which are traditional puppets from the Alentejo,
dating back to the 18th century, and represent a classical example of popular culture.
