Lisbon Marathon |
Portugal’s oldest marathon event. |
Every year in December, the streets of the Portuguese capital are
invaded by the Lisbon Marathon – Portugal’s oldest marathon event.
Departing from the emblematic Praça do Comércio, in front of the
River Tagus, the athletes advance through the city centre, passing
through the historic zone of Belém, next to the Monastery of
Jerónimos, listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Belém marks the beginning of the return journey to the Praça do Comércio
where the finishing line is located, in an itinerary that runs
constantly alongside the river. The Lisbon Marathon involves a total
distance of 42.195 km, in a level trajectory involving two circuits.
The event has been
homologated by the AIMS and by the IAAF - the international associations for the
sector.
A Half Marathon will be organized in parallel -- open to all members of the general public
and offering an excellent opportunity to get to know the city of Lisbon.
